Queen Alerghana laughed with her thirteen year old son, Prince Agmar, and eleven year old twin daughers, Princess Akaya and Princess Ejenta. They were walking in the garden. Alerghana suddenly stood in horror, as she saw, in the distence, someone aiming an arrow at prince Agmar! "Agmar!" she cried, "look out!" She ran to her son, and pushed him out of the way just as the arrow flew. She cried out in pain as the arrow struck her close to the heart. She fell to the ground. "Mama!" Akaya and Ejenta cried. Akaya fell to her knees, next to her dying mother. "My children!" Alerghana mumbled weakly. She smiled weakly as she looked at the faces of her children. Her smile soon faded, and her eyes closed, never to open again. "Mama!" Agmar cried, tears falling down his face.
Akaya woke suddenly, crying. She cried for a few minutes, then got out of her bed. She walked to the window. The sun was just starting to rise. She dressed quickly, then walked across the hall to her Ejenta's room. She knocked, hoping she would be awake. "Come in!" she heard Ejenta call from inside the room. She opened the door, and entered, closing it behind her. Ejenta was seated at the window seat. She motioned for her sister to sit next to her. "I had a dream of Mama last night" Akaya said sadly. "The day she was gone forever."

Varalyn danced from the coach, eluding the grip of the footman who was trying to help her down. She looked around eagerly. The coachman leaned down to the footman, and whispered. "I feel sorry for the King, this girl is a handful." Varalyns sharp ears caught everything, and she turned to the coachman. "Father said I must comfort the sorrowful royal personages" She said with dignity. "I was merely getting my energy up." "Hmph" The man snorted. "By tickling the horse until she bolted, annoying me with your constant talk, and bellowing in my ear when I tell you to shut up?!" "Oh, that" Varalyn said complacently, smoothing her wrinkled gown. "Trying to make the long trip interesting for you." "It was interesting all right" The coachman mumbled crossly. "But you aren't angry with me, are you?" Varalyn asked worriedly. "Please don't be angry." She danced in front of the man again, wiping real tears off her cheek. "Because I love you!" And she wildly flung her arms around the startled man, and gave him a resounding kiss. He blushed to the roots of his hair. "Of course not" he said. "Good" She said. "Now may I go in? I am getting rather chilled. Show me the children." She said, ignoring the fact that the prince was a full year older than she. "I am wild to meet them." Then she pulled up her heavy skirts, and ran up the stone steps to the castle. ~ Prince Angmar and his sisters were sitting peacefully talking, when the door was slammed open, and a strange girl stood there. She was tall for her age, and had a cloud of black hair framing her face, startling against her ivory skin. Her eyes were a smoky grey color, and were large, and innocent, framed by thick black lashes. Under that was a dainty nose, and a smiling mouth. She was startlingly beautifull, though only twelve, and when she spoke her voice was low, husky, and slightly breathless. "Are you the Prince and Princesses?" She asked. And when Ejenta nodded yes, startled by the girl, she ran to them, and flung her arms passionately around all of them. "I'm so glad to meet you." She said truthfully. "And so sorry about your Mother. I always liked her. She was such a nice old cove." The children blinked. They had never heard their mother described as a nice old cove before, but they were swept away in the storm of the girls wild chattering. She soon had them lined up facing her, and she examined them carefully, a wicked twinkle in her smoky eyes. "Prince Angmar" Varalyn said. "Hmm, you're quite handsome" She said frankly. "A little to serious around the mouth, maybe. Smile!" And she smiled at him so merrily that he grinned in spite of himself. She nodded. "Much better." Than she turned to the twins. "You two are beautiful" she said warmly. "And I know I am going to have so much fun with you!" "You're princess Varalyn, aren't you?" She wrinkled her nose in distaste. "If you please, I prefer to be called 'Your Royal Highness Princess Adlanniel Symetra Varalyn Larniel Elanor. Can you remember that?" Glancing at the siblings startled faces, she smiled. "No, call me Vara." ~

Akaya nodded to a servent, to show Vara to her room. Akaya walked next to her.
